By Jessi Cape  Tue. Sep. 24, 2013

By celebrating the women of this movement, their cultures, and the already thriving and significant work being accomplished toward goals of Earth democracy, biodiversity, and gender equity, Arise is an important film for its promotion of global unity and progress though the support of women and girls, and specifically, Mother Nature.

there are few things i enjoy more than engaging in someone’s story. one of the ways this happens for me is through documentary films which i go to see in the theater every chance i get.
last week, with a free evening before me, i checked what was playing in portland’s small, independent theaters. i found a film that was to screen only that evening, with the filmmakers on hand for a q and a afterward. four hours later i settled into my seat with nearly 50 other movie-goers to enjoy “arise,” a film made by women about women who are leading movements, small and large, to better the earth. what i noticed as i looked around the theater was plenty of grey hair, a significant lack of men, and far too many empty seats. when the final credits rolled, i found myself deeply moved by the stories i had just heard and the women i had just met.

Recently I attended a screening at the 6th Annual Colorado Environmental Film Festival of the new documentary film , ARISE, narrated by Darryl Hannah. The film captures the stories of women around the globe, who are leading the way to a sustainable future to rebuild their families, their neighborhoods and their communities. The film highlights a new generation of women who have acknowledged that the natural environment has become disconnected from our lives, our hearts and our beings. The featured women, from Africa, Palestine, Israel, India, Ecuador, and all over the United States, including the South Bronx, San Francisco and Denver, speak with passion and conviction about their communities, their families and their connection with the natural world that surrounds them. The theater was packed and the audience was captivated by the powerful emotions and the remarkable results across all demographics and all types of environments – from very rural to very urban. As a Bedouin Palestinian woman noted, with conviction, “When you can vision a different reality, you can live a different reality”.

The film won the Spirit of Activism Award at the Environmental Film Festival. Be sure and see this doc if you have the opportunity!

“Thoughtful, beautiful Arise inspired me to consider how I might contribute to the Earth’s health.” –Josephine Jones, Colorado Humanities

“This is an amazingly inspiring and empowering film for all people everywhere. And especially for women who want to help the earth, all species on it and the children of the planet. I absolutely LOVE it!” Catherine Molland, Artist, Santa Fe, NM.
